Sparkes Cup 2026 and Semmence Cup 2026: results

The day saw round robin fixtures between the RCS, C&G & RSM, alternating between rugby & netball matches, with some of the rugby lads exchanging the egg-shaped ball for the round one and trying their hand at Netball. Ultimately the victories went to the Royal College of Science for both rugby and netball. With the Sparkes Cup and the Semmence Cup both coming home to the RCS.

We would wish to thank student Louis Beucher for his organisational input and to our captains, Sami Brown (rugby) & Charlotte Hawley (netball) for helping organise the event and ensuring a strong showing from the teams. Our very own Stephen Davies deserves our thanks for organising everything on behalf of the Associations who funded the event. And, of course, so do our match officials Olly Tatlow, who brilliantly refereed the rugby matches, and Julia Mark and Lisa Huse who similarly umpired the netball matches.… Read more...

Sparkes & Semmence Cups 2026

On Sunday June 14th Imperial’s inter-college rugby competition continues. Once again the RCS, C&G and RSM rugby teams are preparing to go head-to-head in the Sparkes Cup’s 2026 match!

Interleaved between those matches, the RCS, C&G and RSM netball teams will also compete head-to-head (for only the third time) for the recently founded Semmence Cup.

And our Netball team will be playing, for the first time in their new kit, as provided by your RCSA.

The location is once more our traditional sporting home of Harlington (Sipson Lane, Harlington, Hayes UB3 5EH).

As in previous years, the RCSA, the CGCA and the RSMA are sponsoring this events making food and drink available……..all free of charge.

And Jezebel and the RCS Motor Club will be there too, supporting our teams and offering another point of interest for RCSA members.

The Clemtenary and where to see Jezebel during 2026

As always, Jezebel and the RCS Motor Club have a packed schedule for the year 2026.

But before we go into the details:

Events, this year are influenced by the 100 year anniversary of two of Jezebel’s friends. Both Clementine II (affectionately known as Clem), the 1926 Morris T-type truck, run by the Royal School of Mines Motor Club and Derrick, City and Guilds’ 1926 Ner-A-Car motor bike, are 100 years old this year.

Which brings us to the Spring Term’s flagship event: The “Clemtenary Dinner” taking place at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon on the 21st of March 2026. Tickets will grant you access to a range of entertainment at the museum on the day, and the 3-course dinner in the evening.… Read more...

RCSA helps the “bottom line” for Jez and RCS Motor Club!!

The RCSA continues on its mission to support all aspects of RCS student life at college and recently had an opportunity to support the RCS Motor Club directly on the bottom line!

The RCS motorised mascot, Jez, has attracted a lot of support and attention going back over the decades. To keep her on the road usually involves major items such as the engine, the wheels or more recently the radiator, but it had become apparent that the front bench seat cushion was not up to the job. It was worn thin, full of holes and no one could remember quite how old it was!

RCSMC president, Otto Pilbrow (pictured above being well supported) commented:
“we had been so focused on keeping Jez on the road that we had forgotten about issues such as driver comfort!!”

What a mess! The old driver’s cushion.

The RCSA stepped in and commissioned a tailor-made new cushion that has just been installed!… Read more...

Where to See Jez: Summer 2025

The flagship summer event is, of course, the “Isle of Wight, Havenstreet Steam & Beer Festival” from 22nd August to 25th August 2025 (though Jez herself, being a star attraction, has to be around longer, perhaps a day or two either side).

Jezebel will form part of a fabulous collection of vintage transport, and there is the traditional fairground, live entertainment, and steam trains for you to enjoy. (and did we mention a beer festival?) You can find out more about the Isle of Wight Festival by clicking here….… Read more...

Announced: The Derek J. Toms Fund for Jezebel

Today, on his last day of office, Jack Swires, outgoing RCS Motor Club Chairman, added the finishing flourish to the Motor Club’s 70th Anniversary and announced The Derek J. Toms Fund for Jezebel or ‘The Toms Fund’ – an emergency fund, and a special-projects fund designed to support Jezebel and the RCS Motor Club.

It is structured as a new ‘restricted’ fund within the RCSA Trust, and named for Derek John Toms, the founder of the RCS Motor Club back in 1955. Members ‘of a certain vintage’ will remember that Derek was a chemist who was fully immersed in RCS and College life. He became a member of the ’22 Club in 1955 (Toms ’55), and married ‘Paddy’ (Mary Stella) Clarke, a Mathematician, who was RCSU Vice President. Stories are still told of Derek’s room in the Hostel which more closely resembled a garage than a bed/study room.… Read more...

A Most Successful Mascotry Dinner

On Saturday, March 21, 2025 a formal dinner took place in the Union Dining Hall at Imperial College Union.

While significant in its own right, as the first formal dinner in the UDH for a decade, this was no ordinary gathering!  It was a joyful celebration of the vibrant mascotry scene that used to permeate through Imperial life. And the RCSA was delighted to support the event, with our members attending in force.

As many readers will know, mascots have long been a symbol of university camaraderie, with most universities having some sort of mascot. Within the University of London, making off with another college’s violable mascot, in order to ransom it for charity, was once quite the thing.

Imperial’s violable (i.e. stealable) mascots take the form of colossal metallic representations of technical instruments, beautifully engineered to reflect Imperial’s technical bent.  Some of you may recall lugging around the RSCU’s violable mascot, Theta, an oversized stainless-steel representation of a thermometer. … Read more...

Celebration of Mascotry

The Royal College of Science Association are working with the Royal College of Science Motor Club to put on a Mascotry Dinner, an occasion dedicated to celebrating the mascots of Imperial College, to be held on 22nd March, 2025 at the Imperial College Union Dining Hall.

This year marks FOUR significant milestones: the 70th anniversary of the Royal College of Science Motor Club and of the Royal School of Mines Motor Club, and the 50th anniversary of the current iterations of Theta and Davy.

We invite you to join us in commemorating these landmarks and honouring the rich traditions of Mascotry.

With Jez, Clem, Bo, Derrick, Theta, Davy, Spanner, Bolt, and Mike the Micrometer in attendance, this is an event not to be missed.

The evening will commence with a reception at the RCS and RSM Motor Club garages, where guests will be treated to a curated exhibition showcasing the history of Mascotry at Imperial.… Read more...

Where to See Jez: Summer 2024

As always, Jezebel and the RCS Motor Club have a packed schedule this Summer of 2024.

Fast approaching is the “Run from Imperial” on Saturday 27th July. The much-loved run is making a return and will again start from the Harlington Sports Ground  (which is conveniently located outside the ULEZ), but this year it will go to the de Havilland Aircraft Museum, Salisbury Hall, London Colney, Hertfordshire, AL2 1BU (also conveniently located outside the ULEZ) and back. (Despite rumours to the contrary Jez is NOT repeating last year’s trip to the Rural Life Living Museum at Farnham). Meet with Jez up in London Colney, or bring your own vehicle and join the ‘run’. There might even be spaces on Jezebel and/or Clementine! Contact RCSMC by clicking here, to check…..

And there is the “Chertsey Agricultural Show” on 10th and 11th August where Jez will be parked next to large body of water to allow some decent pumping, and will be called upon to extinguish two very real (and obviously not at all staged!)… Read more...

Glittering and Steamy Night in West London!

What an evening!? The dust is only just settling after the fantastic joint RCSA and RCS Motor Club (RCSMC) dinner at the London Museum of Water and Steam (LMWS) last Saturday evening 23rd March. A lively group of students, alumni, faculty and guests gathered for the RCSA 116th and the RCSMC 69th anniversary dinners for what was in all likelihood their first ever joint dinner! The venue itself was spectacular with the largest collection of steam engines in the world as well as associated historical displays forming the backdrop for an evening of fine food, fine wines and scintillating conversation followed by two very entertaining guest speakers! Some of the steam engines were operational during the event as well, adding to the atmosphere (quite literally!!)

The Dean of RCS (or Dean of FoNS if you want to be terribly modern), Professor Richard Craster was in attendance with his wife Bernadette and he provided a delightful insight into his undergrad and postgrad days studying maths at Imperial.… Read more...
