RIP Brendan Clements

Members of the RCSA will be deeply saddened to hear of the sudden and unexpected passing of Brendan Clements. Brendan will be familiar to many as the much-loved manager of the Union Bar from January 1969 to December 1979. Brendan had been in good health, but collapsed on the 17th March, on Saint Patrick’s night, after suffering a cardiac arrest, brought about by a blood clot on the brain. He never recovered. The medics did all they could but it was a great shock to us all when they pronounced him dead on the 19th. Colin Fletcher composed a short and sweet obituary which you can access by clicking here…… Brendan Gregory Clements.9 May 1950 to 19 March 2021. Rest in Peace.

New Dean Appointed

As we say our final farewells to Tom Welton, outgoing Dean of FoNS (or Dean of the RCS as we like to call him), we welcome the new incumbent, Professor Richard Craster, who will take up the role from 1 January 2020. Professor Craster will be familiar to many, particularly perhaps the mathematicians amongst us, as he completed his BSc and his PhD in the Maths Department and was head of the department from 2011 to 2017. Professor Craster said: “It’s an honour to take up the role of Dean in the faculty where I have conducted my entire academic career. I look forward to working with colleagues across our departments when I start in January.” We are looking forward to working with him. You can read the College announcement here.

Sparkes Cup Gets Better and Better

MATCH REPORT: On the 22nd of June 2019, a group of approximately seventy students and alumni of Imperial College London descended upon Grasshoppers RFC for the third annual Sparkes Cup since its revival in 2017. A competition steeped in history between the three constituent colleges of Imperial: the City & Guilds College, the Royal School of Mines and last but not least the Royal College of Science. The day started in West Kensington, when a group of students, players and spectators boarded a bus towards our hosts for the day, Grasshoppers RFC. Arriving at the venue for 12.30pm, the players of the three colleges began to warm up for the round-robin seven-a-side tournament, whilst the spectators settled in for an exciting day of rugby.  The first match of the day saw the engineers take on the miners, who in previous years have struggled for numbers but were anything but intimidated and took the game to the engineers. This proved an exciting affair, with tries from either side and the referee excitedly awarding a penalty try. However, despite RSM’s best efforts, City & Guilds walked away the victors 29 to 14. Much the same appeared to follow, with the scientists now […] Read More
